Is your retirement fully funded?
A pension fund measures itself one way: are the assets enough to cover what it has promised to pay? You can ask the same question. Your “floor” is the essential spending that can’t stop when the market drops. This tool subtracts the guaranteed income you already have from that floor, and estimates the lump sum it might take to close what’s left with income you can’t outlive. An estimate to learn from — not a quote.
Most people assume buying guaranteed income means giving up their stocks. It usually doesn’t. Retirement researchers who have studied this — Wade Pfau’s work is the best known — generally find that the money for an income floor comes most naturally from the bond side of a portfolio, not the growth side. The bonds and the annuity are doing the same job, which is paying reliable income, and only one of them is designed to keep paying for as long as you live. The growth side stays invested for inflation and for whatever you want to leave behind. General education, not a recommendation; whether any of this fits you depends on your own situation.
